US Masters
The world famous Masters run from the 5th till the 8th April. This year sees the 40th anniversary of BBC Sport's exclusive, live television coverage of the world's most prestigious overseas golf tournament – the US Masters – from Augusta, Georgia. Diary of a Nobody
Andrew Davies's brilliant, two-part adaptation of the classic comedy novel The Diary Of A Nobody stars Hugh Bonneville as the wonderfully pompous diarist Mr Charles Pooter – the Victor Meldrew of his day – who guides his audience through the minutiae of middle-class manners. It first appeared in Punch as a two-and-a-half-column sketch in 1888, and George and Weedon Grossmith's superb satire on the snobberies of suburbia was considered so successful that it was released as a novel in 1892. (Simulcast with BBC FOUR)

BBC FOUR Session
Ray LaMontagne is featured in an episode from this series of intimate concerts. (Simulcast with BBC FOUR)

A Night of celebrity chefs
Rick Stein and the Japanese Ambassador, The Secret life of Mrs Beeton and Fear of Fanny all feature in this evening of catch up programmes featuring some of Britain’s most fascinating foodies.

3lbs
A drama about a team of top New York City neurosurgeons who explore the brain – the core of intelligence, the centre of emotion and spirit and the last great medical frontier. Doug Hanson (Stanley Tucci) is a brilliant neurosurgeon with a sharp wit, who compares the workings of the brain to wires in a box. His thoughtful, highly skilled protégé, Dr Jonathan Seger (Mark Feuerstein), honours the mysteries of the mind. While Hanson prefers to focus on the intricacies inside people's craniums instead of the people themselves, Seger uses his charm, instinct and intuition to balance the emotional and psychological needs of his patients. (Simulcast with BBC ONE)

BBC ONE Sessions
Two new additions to this series of intimate concerts, one featuring Amy Winehouse and another with Yusuf Islam. (From BBC ONE)

Upcoming spring HD titles
Superstorm
It's one of man's greatest endeavours: to control the weather. But what if fantasy became reality? What would it mean for the human race? Who would have control of this immense power? In this science-based thriller – from the team behind Supervolcano – a group of scientists are asked to do just that. What happens if they succeed? Where do you divert hurricanes to? Who decides who lives and who dies? Superstorm's Anglo-American cast includes Nicola Stephenson and Tom Sizemore.

HR
Starring Jonathan Pryce and Nicholas Le Provost HR is the story of two white middle aged men – one is a middle manager, the other is his HR person. Both of them are under threat from the brave new world of management consultancy. HR is a piece about the “tight spot” many employees find themselves in when working in modern, faceless corporations. The madness going on in offices, at away days and by water coolers – all over the country. Written by Nigel Williams and executive produced by Jon Plowman.

Canon's TX1 Merges HD Stills And Video

Canon's new Powershot TX1 not only offers a 7.1 Megapixel stills performance but also 720p (1280 x 720) at 3ofps.

The TX1 can continuously record up to 4GB at 720p on fast SD cards giving you about 13 minutes of HD footage.

The sensor is a new single 1/2.5 CCD with a 10X optical zoom equivalent to 39–390mm ƒ3.5~5.6 (35mm film equivalent)• Macro focusing 3.9 inches ~ 1.6 feet; Super-Macro from surface of front element ~ 3.9 in.• 12 element design, including one UD and one Aspheric element• Special new optical and mechanical technologies keep lens design ultra-compact

Canon also offer optical an Image Stabilisation system which makes long telephoto zoom practical, even in less than ideal lighting conditions.

Hitting the US stores at the beginning of March at around $500 with a component cable (there is no HDMI out). The model doesn't even make the Canon UK web site so anybody's guess when it will be available.

UK Government Responds To 'More HDTV' Petition

The UK Government has responded to a petition on the Downing Street website arguing that Ofcom should 'ring fence' bandwidth for HDTV when analogue is switched off. If you expected anything but a sit-on-the-fence response you will be disappointed – see the response below:

"The Government recognises that HD is one of many applications that could utilise spectrum released by Digital Switchover.

Like Ofcom, the Government believes that technology-neutral auctions offer the most effective way of allocating spectrum. However, we also accept Ofcom's view that some applications generate benefits for society, and that it is vital that these benefits continue to be captured in a world where spectrum if a flexible, market-based resource.

Spectrum management is now a matter for Ofcom, the independent regulator of the communications sector. On 19 December, Ofcom issued a consultation document on the Digital Dividend Review (which is concerned with the allocation of spectrum released by Digital Switchover). The consultation ends on 20 March 2007 and the Government looks forward to the developing debate the consultation has generated.

Given that the consultation is still in progress, we would advise the petitioners to respond to the above consultation, at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/ddr/ in order to register their views. Additionally, Ofcom's contact details are at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/contactus/"

Good And Bad News From RED Leader

Jim Jannard, founder and (RED) leader of the RED camera has posted some good and bad news updates on reduser.net.

They are as follows:

"OK. So here we are, right in the middle of putting together the impossible. We started from scratch 14 months ago on the quest to produce a mind-blowing revolution in digital cinema in an incredibly short period of time. We also committed to an "open development" format. Here is where we are today:

This is a tremendously difficult project with a ton of problems to solve everyday. We are not finished, but we are getting there. There is good news and bad news. Let's start with some good news.

We are on track to begin delivering the 1st RED ONE (Spike) cameras somewhere around NAB as promised. We will show working cameras at NAB. The Mysterium® sensor is all world. Images are incredible. The complete system has come a LONG way since NAB last year, thanks to many of you. The specs should hold or improve from expectations.

Some bad news. The 1st cameras that ship will not be full feature enabled. I expect about 85% of all features to come with Serial #1-100.
Some more good news. All the important features (including 4k REDCODE RAW) will be enabled from the beginning. The camera will be useable from day one.
Some bad news. Users will have to upgrade software and firmware to enable remaining feature sets for the 1st couple of months. 100% of features enabled by June or July.
Good news. It will be easy to upgrade feature sets.
Bad news. Production will be a bit slower ramping up than originally thought.
Good news. We still believe that we can fill all reservations safely by September or October.
More good news. REDCINE will be available from day one. It is a Pro application that will do more than you would expect. And all of the hardware, including EVF, LCD, drives and rail system will be ready when the cameras are shipping.

Remember, specs and delivery dates can change at any moment. But we feel pretty good about what our customers will get. Experts (under NDA) are pretty fired up at where we are and what we are doing.
Bad news. We can't tell you their names.
Good news. We will be able to tell you at NAB.

Overall, I am confident that all reservation holders will be extremely happy. If not, we will offer a 110% refund to any reservation holder that does not agree after we present at NAB.

More info. 4K images will be projected on a Sony 4k projector in our booth. We will show working cameras, live capture and a complete working REDCINE workflow in the booth. There will be significant announcements and industry partnerships made at NAB along with new pieces added to the system, including lenses, on display at NAB.

We will always tell you the truth about our development. As soon as we know for sure. That's where we are today.

Jim"

The HD Week weekly Podcast

This week we’re on the trail of what Apple will be showing at this year’s NAB Convention. Traditionally Apple are very tight-lipped about what they will show but this year people’s expectancy of substantial upgrades have led us to one of London’s only ‘Apple-only’ post facilities, UNIT.

We talked to their technical head Tim Burton about how Apple has enabled them to make money from off-the-shelf computer products.

Blu-Ray Wins!!

Research company Understanding & Solutions, fresh from the UK launch of PlayStation 3, has committed themselves to backing Bluray as the winner of the dual formats Hidef disc battle.

Jim Bottoms, Joint MD of the company, says that in "12 months time it'll all be over!" He reckons that the number of studios behind BD will see off HD DVD even though PS3 is to retail above £400.

Jim's PDF presentation is here

A Podcast with Jim is here

And on iTunes here

In Jim's conversation he mentioned that he thought that PS3 had done away with the fan, which was such a problem with Xbox 360 and using it as a standalone DVD player. In fact Sony haven't done away with the fan but used larger components and a system of heat exchangers, cooling radiators and sinks to provide practically silent running of the console, something that users would expect from a £425 player.

Driving Digital Content Seminar

Driving Digital Content - meeting consumer needs in-home and on the move
7-8 June, The Cumberland Hotel, London

Without doubt, digital content delivery is on the rise, with increasing consumer demand for entertainment and information however, wherever and whenever they choose. With the technologies in place and revenue streams beginning to grow, the future importance of this sector cannot be overstated. However, to maximise commercial success, companies must fully understand the evolving segment behaviours, key revenue generators, the technology drivers and the role of online, mobile and broadcast platforms, both in the home and on the move.

Understanding & Solutions, as one of the leading market analyst and consultancy firms serving the content, consumer electronics, broadcast and storage media industries, is delighted to announce a two-day conference focusing on the business opportunities presented by the rise of digital content delivery.

“Driving Digital Content: meeting consumer needs in-home and on the move” will bring together key figures from leading consumer electronics companies, content owners and producers, broadcasters, service providers and industry associations, to identify the opportunities within digital content delivery and their impact upon the wider industry.

Topics to include:

• The tip of the iceberg: Digital content revenues are beginning to take shape, with huge growth expected over the coming years, but where are the key revenue streams?

• The bigger picture: Portability is the current keyword, but to step up to the next level the living room experience is vital, and that means fully-integrated home networking solutions.

• The flexibility factor: Digital content delivery allows consumers to access content whenever and wherever they choose. How will the different platforms of online, mobile and broadcast provide this flexibility?

• Playing the field: Where are the opportunities and how will they compare across the different platforms? What challenges will have to be overcome to achieve critical mass?

• The evolving consumer: Within the overall market, which niches could become the key revenue generators and how is consumer behaviour likely to change as the market develops?

Phantom Cameras Have First US Dealer

Vision Research has announced the establishment of a strategic partnership with NY and CA based Abel Cine Tech Inc. for the sales, rental and technical support of their Phantom HD and Phantom 65 high-speed digital cinema cameras.

The Phantom HD camera is capable of taking as many as 1000 frames-per-second (fps) at HD resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. When used in 2K applications (2048x1556, for example) the camera can take up to 700 fps. The digital sensor is equivalent in size to 35mm film, giving cinematographers true 35mm depth-of-field, while the PL lens mount provides access to a wide range of professional cine lenses.

As the world’s first 65mm digital cinema camera, the Phantom 65 is capable of taking up to 120 fps at resolutions up to 4096x2440 equivalent in size to 65mm film.

Panasonic's First 2.2 MPixel EFP Camera

Panasonic USA has announced the companies first 2MP EFP camera, the AK-HC3500, but without a recorder attached.

Other announcements were a 16GB P2 card, a new P2 camcorder which isn't confirmed to transfer to Europe, the AG HPX500 and a new field P2 player/recorder the AG-HPG10.

Panasonic Europe has said that the HPX500 will retail for €13,000 in Europe but due to anti-dumping legislation the EFP camera won't be available in Europe.

New Phones Have WVGA Screens

At the recent 3GSM mobile phone show in Barcelona a couple of phones of interest to the HD fraternity were the Toshiba G900 and the iMate 5150 both with a WVGA screen (800x480) with a total of 384000 pixels.

A question for users would be power consumption as this screen would presumably drag more power but with Sanyo's 7in 1920x1080 screen announced recently these increased resolutions point the way to mobile HD programming in the next couple of years.

Sign A Petition For More HDTV!

There are currently two petitions on the UK's Downing Street website about high definition television. One, already signed by over 1600 people, wants the government to allow more bandwidth to be apportioned to HDTV and not mobile devices. This petition ends on Feb 21 so be quick to sign.

(or cut'n'paste this http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/openhdtv/)

The second is for broadcasters to have to adhere to minimum bit rates for both SD and HD TV to ensure a good picture quality on all sizes of screen.

First RED Pic is Prototype 'Franky'

Our excitement of the first picture of the RED camera was tempered by the fact that it is actually the prototype dubbed 'Franky' , thanks to Pol at digitea.es/blog/ for correcting us.

Picture included here is from reduser.net of 'Franky' (with the RED 300mm lens) in action at a noisy event looking at the ear plugs in use.

Fletcher Chicago 'Chosen' As Arri D-20 Dealer

Fletcher Rentals in Chicago has been chosen by Arri to rent their only digital HD camera the D-20. They will be the dealer in the US Midwest. Other dealers include Clairmont Camera in LA and Canada and Arri CSC in New York and Florida.

This appointment continues Arri's careful marketing of their digital acquisition camera system, but this stealthy approach makes sense when you have such a portfolio of film cameras that you don't want to compete with – same situation as Panavision and their Genesis HD camera.

Arri has always contended that the D-20 is a television camera and not a film camera, an obvious marketing statement to create distance between their film and digital systems.

Grass Valley Put CMOS Into Their Infinity Camera

Last year Grass Valley hinted that they were looking to use CMOS chips only when they thought the quality was good enough for their cameras.

Well December 5 last year was the date that they decided that they were. The Xensium CMOS sensor is to be put in to their new Infinity Broadcast camera for shipping sometime this summer after field trials.

The sensor is their own design and offers 2.4 million pixels and control which will allow pixels to be read in any order meaning you can capture in interlace or progressive. The sensor also has a 12-bit A/D on the chip which GV say will lower noise even more.

Spec is 2/3in 1920x1080 and they claim will record 1080/30p at the top end. There were no decisions as to what other cameras will get the CMOS sensor but it seems likely that this development is open ended.

The Infinity itself is as IT as you can get and even has a GB Ethernet port out of the side. At the moment it will take compact flash and REVPro 32. The REVPro 70 is hoped to be supported sometime this year.

The 'media' camera records to JPEG 2000 as present but the concept is to carry different codecs to suit what you are shooting. JPEG2k as its known is an unknown as far as how it will work in post and the workflows are being designed as we speak.

Since the introduction the model has undergone improvements in cooling and now has Bluetooth connectivity to up to five remotes for Metadata checking and writing.

Prices will be around £17k for the body and on the shoulder should be under £30 depending on lens. REVPro disks are around £60.
