"Picture the scene, Jim Jannard of RED calls Steve Jobs of Apple Computers to see if he’s interested in his new camera and how together they could democratise the movie business with it and Apple’s editing software."
The Business of Shooting RED

"At the time plans for the Wallander series didn’t include the RED camera – it was thought that 16mm would be the format, but then the BBC banned the use of 16mm, which gave producer Simon Moseley a big problem."
The BBC Shoots Wallander with RED

“We looked at REDs but we buy kit like Vipers and F35s for the longevity of the products and the company back up and for us the ultimate in quality regardless of price. The RED is obviously an exciting product but potentially flawed for all sorts of reasons. If you’re prepared to put up with it you will get some lovely results but nothing more than a F900R/F23 that’s set up properly."
Buying into Digital Cinematography

“We think we’re building a camera that will be suitable for a lot of people. We like to have this small independent company that builds cameras for people like us. We were discussing to have ‘Good Enough’ as a tag line for the new camera but we didn’t think people would understand the 'British-like' understatement of it! 1920x 1080 is good enough in pixel resolution, 12-bit colour depth RGB is good enough and is much better than 10-bit that RED is achieving and much better than 8 bit which is HDCAM.”
IKONOSKOP happy to be 'good enough'

"Each ident starts with a close-up of the animal’s eye then cuts to a wider frame of the animal ‘performing’ some form of action, which develops the new sideways ‘E’ of the Animal Planet logo.In order for this simple idea to have impact and present the animals in a new way. It was Milton and Mordue’s idea to shoot these animal scenes in super slow motion."
Using the Phantom for channel idents

"Maxwell reasoned that three photographs taken through three filters – red, green and blue – could be projected through the same filters and overlapped, creating a full colour image (actually, he tried a yellow filter too, but we’ll keep quiet about that). It worked, though it turned out his success was an accident."

Deep into Depth of Field

Really! The nonsense I’ve heard people talk about Depth of Field. I once heard a Director justifying a more expensive set of prime lenses to his Producer on the basis that they gave a shallower depth of field. The lenses were the same focal lengths and had the same maximum apertures. The Producer bought it (and the lenses). I’m not sure if the Director was serious, but if he was just pulling the wool then he was a better actor than anyone else on the film. Read More
