First UK Drama To Use Canon EOS 5D MkII As Main Camera

DP Tim Palmer with the Canon 5D MkII rig on the BBC Drama about the beginnings of Coronation StreetWith a working title of 'Florizel Street', the BBC are currently filming a new drama about the early days of Granada TV in England and the team behind one of the longest running soaps in the world 'Coronation Street'.

The main camera being use is the Canon 5D MkII and both DoP Tim Palmer and Director Charles Sturridge are already huge fans. In fact Tim will be using the 5D on all the moving car shots and interiors of a new series of 'Hustle' as well after his recent experience.

The full story of the shoot will be in our next issue and Digital Issue.

Excellent.
Now Canon needs to wake up (before someone else does an "Oakley" on them) and get their act together.

1) they need to first of all, enable full 1080 output from the HDMi out without the silly red dot and other limitations. This will allow for recording to Flash disks at higher bitrates and codecs

2) they need to do something about moire patterns

3) *wish list** genlockable for 3D... maybe come out with another model.

Regards

To me, while the 5DII which I use principally for my news work, has morphed into an excellent all rounder, but would be better with;

Full HD through the HDMI when recording
Audio Meters on the screen above the image with adjustments possible while recording
Audio out to headphones while recording
50i and 60i - yes! Interlaced same as ENG Cameras - Wow imagine this big chipped camera recording at 50i
Auto Focus off the sensor during video recording -Nikon now do it on 2 x HDSLR's
Low light capability same as 1DMKIV - ISO up to 102,000

Yeah, for me these additions would be a huge, huge bonus for my work.

* Adjustable framerates in video 1fps to 300fps
* Focus pulling (button operated). Focus pulling is a major weakness
* More flexibility with shutter speed e.g. 1/24, 1/48, etc
* Multi-charger accessory: charge multiple batteries (2 or more) concurrently. With car adapter.
* (MK3?) option for xvYCC color

Cheers!
