Technicolor Offers HDR Grading Services and Software Licensing

Technicolor has announced that they are to start HDR grading at their LA facility and have a tone-mapping plug-in for grading gear.

Technicolor's services to content creators has  now been extended to add HDR (High Dynamic Range) mastering for movies, TV shows and commercials. Technicolor are, to a point, playing catch-up with HDR as Dolby has already signed grading gear manufacturers up with their mastering plug-ins and has already announced tie-ins with TV makers like Vizio for their VIZIO Reference Series 65” and 120” Ultra HD Full-Array LED Smart TVs. A recent Dolby announcement also mentions an initial slate of Warner Bros. 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision titles confirmed for distribution via VUDU and Walmart’s video.

Pinewood to Double Capacity following £135 Million Funding Boost

Development of this first phase is shortly due to commence after the company secured a new £135m funding package from a banking syndicate led by Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking.
Europe’s leading film studio provider, Pinewood Group plc, is planning to increase the overall studio production space at Pinewood Studios by approximately 50 per cent as a result of Phase one of the multiphase Pinewood Studios Development Framework (PSDF). Phase one will comprise five new large stages, ten workshops, two production office buildings and associated infrastructure and landscaping.

DIY Jib – even when the airline loses your kit you can still get the shot.UK DOP / Polecam owner operator John Gillan, booked to cover the Azores leg of the Red Bull Cliff Diving competition, flew in to the Azores on his way to the small island where it would take place, 1000 miles from the nearest city and 2 days away from shooting the event. It was not the ideal place to hear from the airline that brought him there "Sorry Mr Gillan, we have lost one of your Polecam flight cases."

World First - Digital Video Revenues to Exceed Packaged Video Revenues in Sweden

This year, Swedish consumers will allocate over 50% of their home video spend to digital video purchases.A Futuresource Consulting report has concluded that in 2013, Sweden witnessed a significant shift in consumer behaviour, with a dramatic decline in packaged video coupled with a strong uptake in digital services. This year, digital video in Sweden is on track to account for more than half of home video spend, making it the first market to reach the digital tipping point, according to the latest research from Futuresource Consulting.

Autodesk to Acquire Shotgun Software, Creator of Cloud-Based Production Management Platform

More than 500 customers, including a number of leading studios, are using Shotgun’s customisable system and contribute to the development of its ecosystem of applications.Autodesk  has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Shotgun Software, a developer of scalable, cloud-based production tracking, review and asset management software for the film, television and games industries. Shotgun's tools for production management are tightly integrated with many of Autodesk's most used tools in the industry including Autodesk 3ds Max and Autodesk Maya software. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Blackmagic Design Introduce A 'Universal Binary' For Their Cameras

With the increase in the number of their cameras Blackmagic has drawn a line in the sand and introduced the same software for all of them.Blackmagic Design today announced the release of Blackmagic Camera Update 1.8 software which includes updated features for all Blackmagic Design cameras. Blackmagic Camera Update 1.8 is available now for download free of charge for all existing Blackmagic Camera customers from the Blackmagic Design support page on their website.

BBC Studios and Post Production extends its partnership with Elstree Studios

BBC Studios and Post Production extend their Elstree contracts by two years.On the back of positive customer feedback and the successful delivery of some high profile shows (like Strictly Come Dancing) from its new consolidated London studio base in Elstree, BBC Studios and Post Production has announced that it is continuing its partnership with Elstree Studios for at least a further two years, until spring 2017.

Anamorphic Shooting Without The Crop Factor And For Under £800

SLR Magic's new anamorphic adapter, the Anamorphot.SLR Magic has introduced the Anamorphot 1.33x 50 anamorphic adapter. 

In the past, many indie filmmakers who wanted to shoot anamorphic had to depend on rare vintage lenses, which were not always reliable.  To achieve the much loved 2.35:1 scope aspect ratio, (which gives a pleasant, epic effect) filmmakers must crop the top and bottom of standard 16:9 footage when using spherical lenses with modern digital cameras. As a result, 25% of sensor/negative information is discarded.
